Sometimes you come across a bottle that simply stands out on the shelf because of the basic nature of its shape. With an old world feel, as if it was hand blown or primitively cast, Bulleit’s bottle alone attracted my attention enough for me to purchase it for a society tasting. Having no history with the drink, the bottle made me commit to the purchase, and now Bulleit 90 Proof Bourbon is no longer a stranger to the society’s senses.
When the society performs its reviews, they are always performed blind. We believe that our tastings and ratings are less biased. With our blind tastings being carried out by multiple society members, we do not go off of any single individual’s opinion. This proved key as one of our members was sick the night of the tasting and thought he was drinking an Irish Whiskey. Our averaging of scores helped negate one member’s stifled senses.
The initial approach was found to be pleasant. The actual proof was not obtrusive to the first sniff and lightened itself after the second and third approach. The nice thing about Bulleit is that its nose is present, meaning that you get a good sense of the character of the bourbon just by its nose. It has a peppery start with hints of the oak barrel. Our society members picked up on notes of vanilla, caramel, smoke and a small presence of fruitiness.
Pleasant to the tongue and soft on the lips, Bulleit presents itself with a smooth and sweet start. Notes of toffee and vanilla come alive on the back of the tongue while the barrel and oak hit the front of the tongue. This makes for a nice combination of spice with the signature sweet of a bourbon. The bourbon flows smoothly over the tongue and does not leave an unpleasant aftertaste. A nice pleasant warming sensation finishes it off.
By the end of the tasting, all members’ scores proved to make Bulleit our highest rated blind taste drink. The society scored this drink a finger rating of 3.3, which is impresive. This score represents the overall flavor profile and smoothness of this beverage that makes it stand out from the others. Bulleit is a drink you can be proud to have on your shelf or to offer as a gift. We highly recommend Bulleit to be experienced in as many ways as possible. It is can stand alone and be enjoyed neat or enhance the quality of any cocktail combination with its reasonable price. For a 750ml bottle that comes in around $32, Bulleit bourbon gets categorized by TCBS as a high value whiskey because of its outstanding taste to price ratio. You don’t have to drop a fortune to have an excellent experience.
